Rhode Island legislators will try to override governor's veto of domestic parter funeral rights bill

12/31/09 AP:
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Rhode Island lawmakers will try to override the governor’s veto of legislation allowing same-sex couples to plan the funerals of their partners ... The bill [here] is among those scheduled to be dealt with before the House and Senate start their new sessions on Tuesday.
The legislation has support from an unnamed "group advocating for gay rights." (Is the group Marriage Equality Rhode Island, which protested the veto?) If the legislature succeeds in a veto override, gay couples will obviously benefit from the right it confers. On the rationale for this legislative strategy in Rhode Island, see this article by Karen Loewy, staff attorney of Gay & Lesbian Adovocates & Defenders.
