Law professor Robin Fretwell Wilson on inadequate religious protections in Maine's marriage-equality law

10/19/09 bangordailynews.com / ADF Alliance Alert:

Robin Fretwell Wilson is a law professor and co-editor of Same-Sex Marriage and Religious Liberty: Emerging Conflicts (Rowman & Littlefield 2008). She and her colleagues - all legal scholars on religious liberty - have submitted recommendations for religious-liberty exemptions in marriage-equality legislation. At this site, Wilson's position was the subject of critical examination by law professor John Culhane in his four-part series, "Marriage Equality and Religious Liberty."

In this article, Wilson explains why Maine's Governor should ask the legislature to add the recommended exemptions to Maine's marriage-equality law. "Without explicit protection in Maine’s law," she claims, "many [engaged in the wedding business] will be faced with a cruel choice: your conscience or your livelihood."
