Law professor Tom Berg on the need for religious-liberty exemptions in same-sex marriage laws

06/01/09 Mirror of Justice:

Tom Berg, a scholar on religious liberty and the law, links to his article in The Christian Century. He defends the idea that "[g]iving meaningful protection to conscientious objectors [who provide marriage-related services] is not only right in principle; it is also a sensible strategy for supporters of same-sex marriage." He would allow for exceptions when same-sex couples experience "substantial hardship," because they lack nearby access to other marriage-related, service providers who are not conscientious objectors.
